Frigidaire Refrigerators

From top-freezer rentals to counter-depth French-door kitchens, here is what to check on your Frigidaire fridge and when to book a diagnosis.

At a glance

Overview

Frigidaire refrigerators fill a lot of Bay Area kitchens, from compact top-freezer units in rentals and in-law apartments to counter-depth side-by-side and French-door models in remodeled flats. The brand’s lineup is wide, and the complaints that bring owners to us tend to follow the cabinet layout more than the badge: a fresh-food section that runs warm, a freezer that frosts over, water pooling inside, a compressor area that hums too long, or a display that shows letters instead of a temperature.

The Frigidaire refrigerators we see most

These refrigerator model numbers each have their own page:

If yours is not in the list, that is fine. We work from the model number on the label, so send it along with the request.

Finding the model label

On most refrigerators the model label is a small sticker on an inside wall of the fresh-food compartment, usually near the top corner or along the side near the crisper drawers. Some units carry it on the door frame or behind the lowest shelf. Take a phone photo of it before you call; a clear picture saves a round of questions.

Complaints that bring people to us

  • Too warm or too cold. Food freezing in the fresh-food side usually points to airflow or a damper, while warm food with a cold freezer suggests the cold air is not reaching the upper compartment. Our post on food freezing in the fresh-food section walks through it.
  • Water inside. A pool under the crisper drawers normally traces back to a defrost drain that has frozen or clogged. See water under the crisper drawers.
  • Noise. Fan blades touching frost, a loose drain pan or a compressor that shakes the cabinet each make a different sound; knocking, buzzing and rattling covers the differences.
  • Sweating and door trouble. Damp gaskets, beads of moisture on the frame, or a door that swings back open are covered in condensation around the doors and a door that will not close.
  • Ice and water dispensing. Slow ice, a stuck chute or a leaking fill line belong with the ice maker service.

What the display letters mean

Several Frigidaire controls show short letter codes. These are the meanings we can confirm:

  • 77 77 is Demo Mode, a store-display setting rather than a fault.
  • SB means Sabbath Mode is active; it is also not a fault.
  • H or HI reports a high temperature after the cabinet has been too warm for over an hour, and PF records a power failure that can set off the same alarm.
  • OP and SH point to an open or shorted thermistor in the fresh-food or freezer section.
  • DI SP is an ice jam in the dispenser chute, with an audible tone.
  • SY CE and SY CF are communication problems between the user interface and the main control board, and SY EF is an evaporator fan failure.

Safe checks before you book

Stay on the outside of the cabinet. Confirm the plug is seated and the outlet or breaker has power. Make sure the doors close fully, that nothing blocks a shelf from the gasket, and that the gasket is clean and seals along its whole edge. If the control offers it, check that the temperature settings have not been bumped. Write down the code and when it appeared. If you must reset, unplug the unit once, wait, and plug it back in, then watch what the display does.

Do not remove back or interior panels, chip ice off the evaporator, or touch the sealed refrigeration lines. If you smell burning or see sparks, shut the power off at the breaker and leave the unit alone. Move perishables to a cooler or a neighbor’s fridge if the cabinet cannot hold temperature.
