Frigidaire Air Conditioners

A room unit that runs but will not cool, leaks indoors or trips the breaker usually has a short list of causes. Start here.

At a glance

Overview

Room air conditioners carry a lot of San Francisco summers on their backs, even though the city is cool most of the year. Warm spells in the Mission, the Sunset and across the bay turn a bedroom into an oven, and tenants and landlords reach for a window or wall unit because ducted cooling is rare in older buildings. Frigidaire room air conditioners fill that gap, and when one stops cooling the owner usually has a fixed day to get it fixed.

The air conditioner lineup

We cover these Frigidaire room air conditioners: FHTC085WC1, FHTC105WC1, FHTC105WC2, FHTC125WC1, FHTC125WC2, FHTC145WC2, FHWC055TF1 and FHWC056TF1. Frigidaire builds window, through-the-wall and portable room units. How a unit is installed matters as much as its model number.

Where the label is

The data plate is usually on the side panel of the cabinet, often visible only after you slide the chassis partway out of its sleeve or look at the side from inside the room. Portable units usually carry it on the back or the lower side. Copy the full model number and the serial number before you contact us.

Common complaints

Running but not cooling

The fan blows, the compressor hums or does not, and the air is only slightly cooler than the room. Dirty filters and a coil caked with dust are the first suspects, followed by a frozen evaporator, a failing fan motor, a start component or a sealed system problem. Our guide on why a Frigidaire room air conditioner is not cooling sets out the order we check in.

Water dripping inside

Leaks indoors usually come from a blocked drain path, a bad tilt, a cracked drain pan or a frozen coil melting. Read Frigidaire room air conditioner leaking water inside before pulling the unit out.

Trips the breaker or will not turn on

A unit on a shared circuit may trip when the compressor starts, and a damaged cord or a dead control board can also be involved. See what to document when an appliance trips the breaker.

Remote, display and noise

A remote that is ignored, a display that stays dark, or a rattle that begins when the compressor kicks on each have separate causes, from a battery to a loose fan blade to a worn mounting.

Error codes

We have no verified display codes for Frigidaire room air conditioners, so we do not decode any. If your unit blinks a light pattern or shows a message, write it down exactly and tell us when you book. The general error code library covers the families that do have verified entries.

Installation details that change the diagnosis

  • Window units depend on a firm sash, a seal around the chassis and a slight outward tilt for drainage.
  • Through-the-wall units live in a sleeve, and a sleeve that has shifted or a rear grille that is blocked by a planter box, a fire escape rail or a neighboring wall changes airflow.
  • Portable units move heat out through an exhaust hose, so a kinked or disconnected hose keeps the room warm.

Safe first steps

  • Check that the plug is seated and that the breaker and any GFCI or reset button on the plug are set.
  • Remove the front filter, wash it, let it dry and put it back.
  • Clear leaves, dust or objects from the outside grille and from the room-side intake, without touching the coil fins.
  • Make sure the unit is not set to a mode or temperature that keeps the compressor off, and that the remote has fresh batteries.
  • If the coil looks iced over, switch to fan-only and let it thaw, with a towel under the chassis.

Do not open the cabinet, and do not handle the coil tubing. If you smell burning, see sparks or find the cord hot, switch off the breaker.
