Frigidaire Ice Makers

Most ice problems start with water supply or freezer temperature, so the checks below follow that order.

At a glance

Overview

Ice trouble is easy to notice and hard to place. The tray goes quiet, cubes shrink to chips, the bin freezes into one block, or water shows up on the floor, and each of those can start in a different part of the system. Frigidaire ice makers come in two forms we repair: the ice system built into a refrigerator freezer, and the freestanding under-counter unit that sits in a bar, a basement or an outdoor kitchen corner.

Two kinds of ice maker, two ways to fail

An ice maker inside a refrigerator depends on the freezer’s cold air, a water line, a fill valve and, on many door-dispensing units, a chute and auger. When the freezer is not cold enough, the maker gets blamed for what is really a refrigerator problem. A freestanding unit is a self-contained machine with its own cooling, water supply and drain. It also needs room around it for air, so a unit pushed into a tight cabinet may struggle in a way the owner reads as a broken maker.

Our model library does not list a specific ice maker number yet. Send us whatever is on your unit’s label and we will work from that.

Where to find the label

On a refrigerator’s ice system, the number sits with the refrigerator, usually on an inside wall of the fresh-food compartment or on the door frame. On a freestanding ice maker, look at the inside wall of the cabinet, the back panel or the side. Photograph it so the full number is legible.

Symptoms and what usually sits behind them

  • No ice at all. The water supply valve may be shut, the fill tube may be frozen, the bin arm may be in the up position, or the freezer may simply be too warm to make ice.
  • Small, hollow or cloudy cubes. Often tied to low water flow, a filter that is overdue, or a partially frozen line.
  • Clumped ice. Cubes that melt and refreeze usually mean temperature swings, or a door that is opened often.
  • Water on the floor or inside the freezer. A tray that overfills, a leaking fitting or a drain fault. Our post on an ice maker that overfills or leaks goes through the causes.
  • Dispenser jams. The chute stops moving cubes, sometimes with an audible tone. On a refrigerator, the DI SP code is the ice jam in the dispenser chute.
  • Odd taste or odor. A stale bin, an old filter or food odors in the freezer.

Water line and installation details

Most nuisance ice problems begin at the supply. A kinked or pinched line behind the unit, a saddle valve that has partly closed, or a filter that has clogged can starve the fill. In older San Francisco buildings the water line to the kitchen is often long and routed through tight cavities, which makes a hidden kink more likely after the appliance has been moved. A freestanding unit also needs a working drain path; if the drain hose rises or sags, water pools in the cabinet.

Checks you can safely make

  1. Open the water supply valve fully and look for dampness at the fitting.
  2. Lift the bin arm into its down position if it is stuck up, and make sure the bin is seated.
  3. Check the water filter date and replace it if it is overdue.
  4. Empty and shake apart a frozen clump of ice, then wash the bin.
  5. Pull the unit forward only as far as the hoses allow, to see whether a line is crushed.
  6. Keep the door shut and give the freezer time to recover its temperature before judging the results.

Do not pry the ice out with a sharp tool, open the rear panel, or run the maker dry. If water is near an outlet or the cord, shut the power off at the breaker before anything else.

When to stop using it

Turn off the supply and the unit if water is leaking steadily, if it runs under the cabinet toward electrical parts, or if there is a burning smell. A leak that is left alone can damage the floor, and in a building with neighbors below, the damage may not stay in your unit.

Next steps

Request the Frigidaire ice maker repair service with the number from your label and a short description of the ice and any water. If the maker is part of a refrigerator, the Frigidaire refrigerator guide covers the cabinet around it. We diagnose first, write up an estimate, and wait for your approval before any work.
