The FRSS2323AS is a side-by-side refrigerator listed at 22 cu ft and 33 inches wide, and it is a current model. Two tall doors share the cabinet: freezer on one side, fresh food on the other. That layout shapes most of the service calls we get on it.

What side-by-side units tend to do

With the cold air for both compartments produced in the freezer side, a fault there shows up in the fresh-food side as well. The usual complaints are a fresh-food side that drifts warm while the freezer still feels cold, frost building on the freezer back wall, ice that has fused into one block, and water pooling under the crisper drawers. Water under the crisper drawers is worth reading if that last one sounds familiar.

• Warm fresh-food side with a cold freezer usually points at air movement or defrost, not the cooling system itself.
• A loud fan or rattle that changes when you open a door often comes from an evaporator or condenser fan.
• Sweating on the outside of the cabinet near the doors can come from the gasket, from the door not sealing, or from humid kitchen air.

Fitting a 33-inch cabinet into a Bay Area kitchen

A 33-inch side-by-side is a common choice for flats and older apartments where the opening is narrow. Walls close on both sides and a cabinet above leave little room for air at the top and back, and a unit pushed tight to the wall can run hot and loud. When we visit we check how much clearance the cabinet really has, that it sits level, and that the water line and drain path are not pinched when the unit is rolled back in.

What you can check before calling

1. Make sure the cabinet is plugged in and the outlet works; test it with a lamp.
2. Look at the door gaskets for gaps, folds or food residue and wipe them clean.
3. Clear anything blocking the vents inside either compartment.
4. Write down any code on the display and the full model label inside the cabinet, usually on an inside wall.

Side-by-side cabinets often carry a dispenser, so check the cabinet to see whether this one does. If yours does, a slow trickle or hollow clunk usually means a frozen fill tube or a supply line that has kinked since the cabinet was last moved. We follow the line from the shutoff valve to the cabinet and check for ice in the freezer before touching the dispenser.
