Why a Frigidaire Washer Shakes Violently or Walks During Spin
A washer that thumps across the floor is dangerous to itself and to the hoses. Most cases come from balance, level or shipping hardware, and some from worn parts.
You start the spin and the whole machine begins to bounce. The cabinet knocks against the wall, the hoses jump, and the washer may creep a few inches forward by the end of the cycle. Sometimes it halts in the middle of a spin and tries again. A washer does spin hard, so some vibration is ordinary, but if it feels like the floor is about to give way, stop and sort out the cause before it damages the hoses or the cabinet.
Out of balance versus out of level
These two are easy to confuse. An out-of-balance load means the laundry has bunched on one side of the drum, so the weight swings unevenly. An unlevel washer means one foot is not carrying its share, so the cabinet rocks. It describes code E4 as an out-of-balance condition during spin, and code E5 as a unit that is not level. Either one can cause the washer to retry the spin several times before it gives up.
The usual suspects
A lopsided or single heavy item
A bath mat, a pillow or a pair of jeans can ball up against the drum wall. Washing one large item alone is a classic reason: it cannot spread out. Mixing heavy items with light ones helps. A load that is too small can also be a problem if it is a single soaked towel.
Feet that are not firm
Front-load washers have four adjustable feet. If one lifts even slightly, you get a diagonal rock. Check each corner by pressing down and see whether the cabinet shifts. In many San Francisco homes, laundry sits on old wood floors that flex, in a closet on an upper level, or on a raised platform. The floor itself can resonate when the drum spins.
Shipping hardware left in
New or recently moved washers often have transit bolts or foam blocks that hold the drum steady for transport. If they were not removed at installation, the drum cannot float on its suspension and the machine shakes violently the first time it spins. A washer that has always been rough and was installed by someone else fits this pattern.
A worn suspension or shocks
Struts, springs and dampers hold the drum as it spins. When they age, the drum swings more widely. The sign is a sound like a thud on each rotation, or a rubbing noise, plus a washer that is still shaking after you level it and balance the load.
A faulty bearing or loose counterweight
A grinding or rumbling that grows with spin speed can mean worn bearings. A loose weight on the drum causes the whole washer to bang at a certain speed. These repairs are done with the cabinet open.
Stacked and closet installations
If a dryer sits on top of the washer, as in a stacked or laundry center layout, the weight above amplifies motion. Hoses may be trapped behind the unit, so any walking pulls them tight. For these units see Frigidaire laundry center repair.
What changes the answer
Pay attention to when the shaking started. A washer that shook from its first load points to installation: shipping hardware, feet or the floor. One that ran quietly for years and has begun to rumble points to wear in the suspension or bearings. A change that followed a move, a remodel or a new floor points to the level. And shaking that appears only with towels, bedding or a rubber-backed mat points to the load rather than the machine. Knowing which of these fits your case can save a visit, or tell the technician which parts to bring.
Checks to do in order
- Stop the cycle, open the door when it unlocks, and redistribute the load by hand. Wash bulky items with a few smaller ones.
- Do not overfill the drum, and do not wash a single heavy item alone.
- Press down on each corner of the top, diagonally, and see whether the cabinet rocks.
- Level the washer with the adjustable feet and tighten the lock nuts on each one.
- Confirm the machine does not touch a wall, cabinet or the dryer vent, and pull it clear of hoses.
- Check the manual for whether your model uses transit bolts and see whether any remain on the back.
What not to do
Do not stand on the washer or lean on it to stop the shaking. Do not place rubber mats under the feet to dampen noise before leveling, because a soft surface changes the balance. Do not keep restarting the cycle if it bangs, as repeated heavy spin loads wear the suspension and the floor. And do not remove the cabinet panel to inspect the drum; a spinning part can hurt you.
Protecting the hoses and the floor in the meantime
Until the cause is fixed, keep the washer from hurting itself. Move it only as far forward as the hoses allow, make sure the supply hoses are not stretched, and see that the drain hose is still seated in the standpipe after a hard spin, because a walking washer can pull it out and flood the floor. Wash smaller, mixed loads and choose a lower spin setting if the control offers one. If you share the building with neighbors below, a pause in use is kinder than a week of thumping. Take a short video of the shaking from a safe distance; it helps the technician judge whether the problem is balance, level or something worn.
When to book
If a level washer with a balanced load still shakes, or if you hear grinding, the cause is inside. Our Frigidaire washer repair visit begins with a diagnosis, a written estimate and no work without your approval. Browse the Frigidaire washers overview, and compare the entry for FAFW3577KR. A cycle that stalls because of imbalance is described in washer stops mid-cycle or pauses.
Frequently asked questions
Heavy loads magnify any small imbalance or weak foot. Level the cabinet, mix item sizes and avoid cramming the drum.
They are bolts or blocks that lock the drum during shipping. They must be removed before the first wash, and the manual shows where they sit.
It can. Soft or flexing floors amplify vibration, and a platform or reinforced board under the washer can help.
A mild shake is acceptable, but violent movement can pull hoses and damage the floor. Stop it and fix the cause.
Yes. Imbalance and level problems can trigger E4 or E5 and make the washer repeat or abandon the spin.
