A discontinued Affinity front load washer that still turns up in many Bay Area flats and rentals.
The FAFW3577KR is a Frigidaire Affinity front load washer with a 3.5 cu ft drum. Frigidaire has discontinued it, so most units we meet are several years into daily use, often in a rental or a flat that came with the machine.
Age matters more than the badge here. A discontinued washer is still a repairable washer in most cases, and the first job is working out which worn part is behind the complaint. Our Frigidaire washer repair page covers the wider picture; we stay with the FAFW3577KR here.
A front load washer ages in predictable places. The door boot collects detergent residue and hair, the drain pump filter fills with lint and coins, and the door lock mechanism wears until the machine will not start a cycle. On a washer in its later years, the shock absorbers under the drum also lose their grip, which shows up as walking and banging during the spin.
If the display shows a code, write it down exactly before touching the power. A slow-fill code is explained on the washer E1 page, and a drain problem on the washer E2 page. An out-of-balance message is covered on the E4 page, and an unlevel machine on the E5 page. Each page gives the meaning only; what causes it on your machine is for the visit to settle.
Look at the floor under the machine and wipe the door gasket fold to see whether it is wet inside. Make sure both water valves behind the washer are fully open. Check that the machine sits level and that no laundry is jammed between the door and the drum. If it will not drain, stop the cycle and leave the door alone until the water level is clear of the glass. Do not open panels or reach into the pump housing yourself.
Our post on a Frigidaire washer that will not drain walks through the safe steps in order.
Have the model number ready; it is usually on a label near the door opening or on the back panel. We diagnose first, give you a written estimate, and repair nothing without your approval. If parts for a discontinued model make the repair a poor bet, the estimate will say so plainly.
For a discontinued washer the honest answer depends on the fault. A drain pump filter or a door boot is a modest job on a sound machine; a failed drum bearing may not be. We lay that out in the estimate, so the decision stays with you. The washers we list are on Frigidaire washers.
No. Frigidaire lists it as discontinued, so the question on each visit is whether the part you need is still obtainable and whether the repair makes sense for the washer’s age.
Moisture trapped in the door boot and detergent drawer is the usual source. Wiping the gasket and leaving the door ajar helps; if the smell comes with standing water, the drain path needs a look.
Stop the cycle and check the level and the load first. If it still bangs with a small balanced load, book a visit rather than letting it run, since the suspension or feet may be failing.
Usually on a label around the door frame or the rear of the cabinet. A phone photo of the label is enough for us to confirm it before the visit.
