Frigidaire Dishwasher Door Won’t Latch or Cycle Won’t Start

If your Frigidaire dishwasher door will not click shut or the cycle refuses to begin, the latch, door alignment or switch is the first suspect. Here is the order to check.

The door is the safety gate of a dishwasher. Behind the handle sits a latch that hooks into the tub and a switch that tells the control the door is shut. If either part does not do its job, the cycle will not begin, or it will begin and then stop. The symptom may be as simple as a door that bounces back, or as odd as a door that seems to latch but leaves the display flashing a door-open code.

The door-open code and what it means

On many Frigidaire models the display reports an open door as Frigidaire dishwasher CL, also written Cd, meaning the door is not fully closed and latched. That is not necessarily a broken part. It often means something is in the way or the latch bolt is not seating. If a different fault is reported, such as Frigidaire dishwasher ER, which describes a switch failure, the switch itself is more likely at fault.

Something is blocking the door

Start with the obvious. A rack pushed in slightly crooked, a long utensil sticking out below the basket, a cup tipped over the rack edge, or a spray arm bumping a tall pan can stop the door from closing fully. Pull both racks out a little and try again. A bulging door gasket or a folded corner of the seal also keeps the door open by a hair, so run a finger along the seal to confirm it lies flat.

The latch, strike and handle

Years of closing the door with a hip bump wear the latch hook and the strike plate. A latch that is loose on its screws, a handle that moves more than it used to, or a door that sags when open all point to alignment trouble. If the door must be lifted slightly to catch, the hinges and springs are worn and the door is no longer square to the tub. That is mechanical wear and it is worth correcting before the door drops further and strains the switch.

The switch and the control

If the latch clicks cleanly but the cycle still will not start, the door switch may not be passing its signal. Switches in a hot, damp, soapy environment can corrode, and wire connectors can loosen. A control board that does not read the switch may beep and refuse to start, or show a code. This part of the diagnosis needs the inner door panel opened, which is not an owner task.

Other reasons a cycle will not start

A closed door alone does not mean the cycle will start, and a few other conditions can hold it back as well. A control lock, a delay-start setting, a power problem and a heat-delay pause can all imitate a latch fault. A short loss of power in the middle of a cycle appears as Frigidaire dishwasher PF. If the panel is completely dark, begin with the breaker; the companion article Frigidaire dishwasher won’t start or controls are unresponsive walks through that case.

Installation details

Built-in dishwashers depend on the cabinet. A unit whose mounting brackets were loosened during a countertop or flooring job may tilt forward, which moves the latch away from its strike. A new floor that is higher than the old one reduces the clearance under the door, and a toe-kick that is pressed against the door bottom can stop it from closing. In older San Francisco kitchens, floors are rarely flat, and a dishwasher can slowly settle out of level over many years.

Checks to make in order

  1. Pull both racks out and look for anything protruding past the tub opening.
  2. Wipe the seal and the tub rim, and feel for a folded corner.
  3. Open the door fully and close it at a steady speed, listening for the click.
  4. Check whether the door sags when opened to the horizontal position.
  5. Look for a control lock or delay-start symbol on the display.
  6. Do one controlled power reset at the breaker and try again.
  7. Write down the code you see and the moment it appears.

What not to do

Do not tape the latch, wedge the door shut, or press the switch by hand while running a cycle. A cycle with a loose door can spray hot water into the kitchen floor. Do not force a door that resists; you may bend the strike. And do not take the inner door panel apart, since the wiring there carries line power for the control.

Why a loose door is worth fixing early

It is tempting to live with a door that needs two tries. But a latch that is catching on the edge of the strike wears faster each week, and a door that is not pulling evenly against the seal can drip at one corner. Over time that moisture reaches the cabinet floor and the wiring harness behind the lower panel. A small adjustment now is cheaper in time and effort than replacing a swollen cabinet base later. If the door has begun to feel different from how it used to, that change in feel is worth mentioning when you call.

When to book

Book when the door still will not catch after clearing the racks and seal, when it sags, when the latch feels loose or when the display shows a door code even though the door is shut. We diagnose before repair, give a written estimate, and repair nothing until you approve it. The model label is usually at the door edge, and the Frigidaire dishwasher repair page explains the visit. See the Frigidaire dishwashers lineup too; the Frigidaire FFBD1831US is one example.
