Frigidaire Dishwasher Won’t Start or Controls Are Unresponsive

When a Frigidaire dishwasher is dead, dim or ignoring button presses, power, the door signal and the control itself are the places to look. Start with the simple checks.

You load the racks, press Start and nothing happens. The display is dark, or it lights up and ignores the buttons, or it beeps and then falls silent. Those are three different symptoms, and they point in three different directions. A dark panel is mostly about power. A lit but unresponsive panel is about the door signal, a lockout or the board. A beep without a cycle is the machine saying something is wrong and sometimes showing a code.

When the panel is completely dark

Most Frigidaire dishwashers are hard-wired or plugged in under the sink on a circuit shared with other kitchen loads. A tripped breaker, a tripped GFCI on the same line, or a disposal switch that has cut a shared outlet will leave the dishwasher dead. Check the breaker panel and any GFCI outlets in the kitchen first. After a power outage the dishwasher sometimes needs the door opened and shut before it wakes up. A momentary loss of power during a cycle can also show up as Frigidaire dishwasher PF, which reports loss of power.

If the breaker keeps tripping when the dishwasher starts, do not keep resetting it. That calls for a diagnosis.

When lights come on but nothing starts

The door switch is the usual gatekeeper. The cycle cannot start unless the latch tells the control the door is fully closed. A dishwasher with a door that is slightly out of square, a latch worn by years of slamming, or a dish blocking the door will stay silent. The code Frigidaire dishwasher CL means door open, not fully closed and latched, and it can also appear as Cd. Press on the door while you close it and listen for a firm click. For a deeper look at that problem, see Frigidaire dishwasher door won’t latch or cycle won’t start.

When the buttons ignore you

Some panels have a control lock that blocks every button until you hold a particular key for a few seconds. A cleaning cloth lying against the panel or a wet front can also confuse touch keys. Dry the panel and wipe it with a soft cloth, then try again. If the panel responds only to some keys, a worn membrane or a failing keypad is possible. Beeps with no action, or a display that flashes a code, are the machine’s way of reporting a problem it has found.

Codes tied to the control itself include the meaning of Frigidaire dishwasher ER (switch failure) and Frigidaire dishwasher CE (configuration error). Those are not owner repairs, but writing down which one you see saves time.

Heat delay, delayed start and other waits

A dishwasher can look stuck when it is actually waiting. A delayed-start setting keeps it asleep for hours. A heat-delay phase makes it pause while the water warms, which is the meaning of Frigidaire dishwasher Hd. Check the display for a countdown before deciding it has failed.

Installation notes

Built-in dishwashers sit in a tight opening with the junction box behind a lower access panel. In rentals and older condos, the cable is sometimes pinched when the unit was pushed back after a counter job, and a loose connection there causes intermittent dead spells that clear when you touch the machine. The dishwasher also needs a working water supply, but a closed valve does not usually stop the panel from lighting.

Safe owner checks in order

  1. Check the breaker and any GFCI outlet in the kitchen, and the disposal switch if the line is shared.
  2. Open the door, remove anything touching the latch area, and close it with a firm push.
  3. Dry and wipe the control panel, then try Start again.
  4. Look for a control lock or delay-start indicator on the display.
  5. Do one controlled power reset: off at the breaker, wait, then on.
  6. Write down what the display shows.

What not to do

Do not remove the kick plate to test wires, and do not bridge the door switch to force a start. A dishwasher that runs with the door unlatched can spray water into the kitchen. Do not repeatedly reset a breaker that keeps tripping. And do not pour water on a panel that seems unresponsive; moisture is more likely to be the cause than the cure.

A short series of beeps with no wash usually means the control found a reason not to run, such as an open door, a switch reading, or a stored fault. Counting blinks on an indicator light matters as much as reading digits on a display. Write the pattern down exactly, including whether it repeats or happens once, because the same tone can follow different faults on different panels. If the display shows nothing readable, take a photo of the panel when the pattern appears.

Why a dishwasher dies after a kitchen job

Dishwashers often stop working right after a countertop, plumbing or disposal change. A shared outlet switched off at the wall, a plug shifted behind the unit, or a leveling foot turned so the door no longer closes square can all cause it. If the trouble began the day after someone worked under the sink, tell us. It points directly at where to look first and saves a good deal of time during the visit.

When to book

Book if the breaker keeps tripping, if the panel stays dark with power confirmed, if the door seems latched but the dishwasher still will not start, or if the control shows a switch or configuration code. We diagnose before repair, give you a written estimate, and do nothing without your approval. The model number is usually at the edge of the door. Details on the visit are on Frigidaire dishwasher repair, and the Frigidaire dishwashers page shows the lineup.
