Frigidaire Dishwasher Fills With Water Then Stops Washing

A Frigidaire dishwasher that fills with water but never starts spraying has a stalled step in its cycle. Find out which parts commonly cause it and what to check first.

You hear the water come in, the valve click off, and then nothing. No whoosh from the spray arms, no hum from the pump, just a tub with a puddle in it. The dishes sit there, and after a while the dishwasher may drain, beep, or simply stay put. That stall between filling and washing has a short list of suspects, and the behavior of the machine tells you a lot about which one.

What the dishwasher does between fill and wash

After the water enters, a Frigidaire dishwasher checks that the fill level is right, waits for the heater to bring the water up where the cycle needs it, and then starts the circulation pump. If the level is not reached, the board keeps filling or gives up. If the heating step is slow, the machine can appear frozen for a while. Some models show a heat-delay indicator for exactly this reason; the code Frigidaire dishwasher Hd describes a dishwasher heating the water before washing, and it is not a fault by itself.

So the first question is simple: has the dishwasher really stopped, or is it waiting? Give it a reasonable pause before drawing conclusions, especially on a cold morning, when incoming water is cooler.

The fill-level and water-valve side

If the tub holds too little water, the pump may not start because the dishwasher thinks it would run dry. A fill valve that is restricted by sediment, a partly closed supply valve under the sink, or a kinked supply line will all deliver a slow trickle. A float or level sensor that sticks, or a pressure switch that does not report properly, can also stop the cycle. Watch the water level against the bottom of the tub when the fill ends. A very low level suggests supply problems; a normal level suggests the stall comes later.

The circulation pump and the filter area

The pump pushes water up to the spray arms. When food debris collects around the filter and sump, the pump struggles, and some machines stop the cycle. The code Frigidaire dishwasher i40 identifies a clogged filter or sump with food debris built up. A pump motor that has failed or seized makes a humming sound but moves no water. A pump that is silent while the control seems alive points to the board, a wire connection or a motor that has stopped for good.

Draining problems can look similar. If the dishwasher drains and then declares the cycle done or stops, check the drain meaning in Frigidaire dishwasher i20, where the tub did not drain completely.

Door, latch and power interruptions

A door that is not latched at the moment the pump should start will pause the cycle. If the latch switch reads open, the machine waits. The code Frigidaire dishwasher CL means the door is open or not fully closed and latched. Short power interruptions also stop the program, which is what Frigidaire dishwasher PF reports as a loss of power. A loose plug or a tripped breaker on a shared kitchen circuit can cause both, particularly if a disposal or microwave is on the same line.

Installation details that matter

In many Bay Area kitchens the dishwasher shares a circuit and a drain with the disposal and the sink. A drain hose without a high loop, or a disposal knockout plug that was never removed, will leave water in the tub and confuse the cycle. A dishwasher built into a tight cabinet can also lose its level when a shim moves, and a door that sits slightly crooked will not engage the latch every time.

Checks you can make in order

  1. Open the door, close it firmly and look for a latch click.
  2. Check that the supply valve under the sink is fully open.
  3. Look in the tub: if it is full of standing water, wait; if it is nearly empty, the fill is the likely problem.
  4. Remove the lower rack, lift out the filter and rinse it under a tap. Clear loose food from the visible sump area.
  5. Make sure nothing is blocking the spray arms from turning.
  6. Perform one controlled power reset: switch off at the breaker, wait a short time, switch on, and restart a short cycle.
  7. Write down any code that appears.

What not to do

Do not remove the lower access panel to test the pump or heater, and do not reach into the sump past the filter. A dishwasher has line voltage, water and a heating element in one cabinet, which is a poor combination for guesswork. Do not keep restarting the cycle repeatedly; a motor that hums without turning can overheat.

When to book

Book if a clean filter and a reset do not change the behavior, if the pump hums but no water moves, if the dishwasher leaves water standing after every try, or if a code keeps coming back. We diagnose first, provide a written estimate, and repair nothing without your approval. Your model number is usually on the inner edge of the door or the tub frame. See Frigidaire dishwasher repair for how a visit works and Frigidaire dishwashers for the lineup. If the dishwasher will not start at all, read Frigidaire dishwasher won’t start or controls are unresponsive.
