Frigidaire Dishwasher Leaves Cloudy Glasses or White Film
Cloudy glassware and a chalky film after the cycle usually come from water, detergent or rinse aid, but a dishwasher fault can add to it. Here is how to tell which.
Pulling a rack of glasses out of the dishwasher and finding them dull, smeared or coated in a pale powder is maddening, especially when the dishwasher ran a full cycle without any complaint. In most kitchens there are two very different things hiding behind the word cloudy. One is a mineral deposit that sits on the glass and wipes off with vinegar. The other is permanent etching, a fine surface damage that cannot be wiped away. Knowing which you have changes everything that follows.
The vinegar test
Soak one glass in white vinegar for a short while and rub it with a cloth. If the haze disappears, it was mineral film from hard water or from detergent that never rinsed off. If it stays, the glass is etched, which comes from soft water combined with too much detergent over time, or from wear on older glassware. Etched glass cannot be repaired; the fix is to change the detergent amount and the habits that caused it.
Hard water and rinse aid
Many Bay Area homes receive water on the soft side, while some East Bay and South Bay areas have much harder water, and buildings with older plumbing add their own scale. Rinse aid helps water sheet off glass instead of drying in droplets. If the dispenser is empty or the monitor does not report it, spots and film show up fast. Some Frigidaire models track the rinse aid level and flash the code Frigidaire dishwasher RA when the monitoring itself fails, so an empty dispenser is worth checking first and a persistent flash second.
Too much or too little detergent
Too little detergent leaves food residue and a scum of grease and calcium. Too much leaves a film that the final rinse cannot remove, and over many cycles etches glass in soft-water homes. Fill the cup to the amount the product asks for, not more. Pods hold a set amount, so they suit households that tend to overfill. If a pod is not fully dissolving, see Frigidaire dishwasher detergent pod not dissolving.
Water that is not hot enough
Cold wash water keeps grease and soap from dissolving. A dishwasher that does not heat properly leaves a cloudy surface even when you do everything else right. The thermistor reports water heat to the control, and its failure shows as Frigidaire dishwasher Th. A weak heating element, or a start in very cold supply water, also shortens the hot phase. Running the kitchen tap warm before the cycle begins is a harmless habit that helps.
Wash performance and the turbidity sensor
Cloudy dishes can also mean the machine is not washing as thoroughly as it should. A clogged filter, blocked spray arm holes or a weak pump leaves soil on glass that dries into haze. Frigidaire models with a soil sensor adjust the cycle by how dirty the water is; the code Frigidaire dishwasher Tu flashes on a detected turbidity sensor failure. A sensor that cannot read the water correctly may choose a cycle that is too short.
Loading and drying habits
Glasses that touch each other do not rinse where they meet, and a bowl facing the wrong way throws splash onto neighbors. Pre-rinsing everything under the tap sounds sensible but can reduce the detergent’s effect because it needs something to work on. A quick scrape is enough. Opening the door at the end of the cycle and letting steam out also helps reduce water spots.
Installation notes
A dishwasher feeding off a long run of piping, a condo with a communal softener, or a rental with a water filter on the sink can behave differently from a house on the same street. If the cloudiness began after a plumbing change, a new filter or a move to a different building, mention it. The cause may be the water, not the machine.
Checks you can do safely
- Run the vinegar test on one glass.
- Fill the rinse-aid dispenser and set the dial to the setting the manual suggests for your water.
- Use the product amount shown on its package, and reduce it if the film looks like soap.
- Clean the filter and the spray arm holes.
- Run a hot tap before the cycle.
- Run a cleaner made for dishwashers on an empty load.
- Write down any flashing code.
What not to do
Do not run bleach, harsh cleaners or two products together, and do not pour vinegar into the detergent cup at the same time as detergent. Do not scrub glass with abrasive pads. And do not open the inner door or lower panel to test the heater or sensors yourself.
Glass that is already damaged
Some glassware simply does not like the dishwasher. Thin decorative glasses, old crystal and glass with a painted rim can lose clarity after a few cycles, no matter how good the machine is. If only one set looks bad while plates and everyday tumblers come out clear, the glassware is the more likely explanation. Hand-wash the odd set and judge the dishwasher by the rest of the load. A dishwasher that leaves every item dull, including plastic, is a different story and deserves a closer look.
When to book
Book if the film returns after you have changed products and cleaned the dishwasher, if the water in the tub feels cool at the end of the cycle, if a sensor-related code flashes, or if the dishes are visibly soiled as well as cloudy. We diagnose before repair, provide a written estimate, and do nothing without your approval. Our Frigidaire dishwasher repair page describes the visit, and the Frigidaire dishwashers lineup helps you find your model label, which is usually along the inner door edge.
Frequently asked questions
No. Water hardness, detergent amount and rinse aid explain most cases. A vinegar test shows whether it is a removable deposit.
Mineral film usually can, with vinegar. Etching cannot be reversed.
Some Frigidaire models monitor it and flash RA if that monitoring fails. An empty dispenser is a simpler cause.
Glass shows spots and film more than other materials, and glasses face down catch water that dries in place.
When water stays cool, the filter and arms are clean but the dishes remain soiled, or a sensor code appears.
