Frigidaire Dryer Squealing, Grinding, or Thumping

Squeals, grinding and rhythmic thumps from a Frigidaire dryer each come from different parts. Learn what the sound suggests and which checks are safe before you book.

A dryer is mostly a drum, a belt, a motor and a handful of supports, so noise has a limited number of places to come from. The useful trick is to listen like a technician: is the sound a high squeal that rises with drum speed, a low grinding that stays even, or a steady thump once per turn of the drum? Each pattern points at a different part, and describing it clearly makes the diagnosis faster.

The high squeal

A squeal that starts when the drum turns and stops when the dryer stops usually involves the belt path. The belt wraps around the drum and loops over the motor pulley and an idler pulley that keeps tension. When the idler wheel bearing dries out, it whistles, and when the belt glazes with age, it chirps against the drum. Both sounds are worse when the dryer is cold and may ease for a while as it warms.

Some squeals come from the drum supports instead. Many Frigidaire dryers carry the rear of the drum on a bearing or glide, and the front rides on small rollers or felt-like seals. A worn support squeals most with a heavy load. Neither belt nor support work is an owner repair, because both need the cabinet opened.

The low grinding or rumbling

Grinding that stays steady while the drum turns can mean a roller whose bearing has failed or a motor bearing that is wearing. A grinding that comes only when the heat comes on is often the blower wheel, which sits at the end of the motor shaft and moves air through the drum. A blower wheel loaded with lint or loose on its shaft rubs and scrapes. If you hear grinding along with a burning smell, switch the dryer off at the breaker and leave it off.

A dryer that tries to start with a hum but no tumbling is a related case. That points to a motor that is struggling or a belt that has broken, and the drum will spin freely by hand if the belt is gone. The motor-related codes, such as Frigidaire dryer E52 (motor stopped or not starting), can accompany it.

The rhythmic thump

A thump once per revolution means something is out of round or loose in the drum. The usual causes are simple. A flat spot on a worn roller, a worn glide, a belt with a lump, or a loose item caught behind the drum lip will all produce it. Coins, a bra underwire or a small zipper pull that slips through the gap between drum and front panel can bang around for weeks before anyone notices.

Before calling anyone, empty the drum and run it empty. If the thump goes away, a heavy or lopsided load was the real cause, and shaking out the load fixes it. If it stays, note whether the sound changes with load size.

A rattle, not a thump

Rattling is lighter than thumping and usually comes from the cabinet rather than the drum. Loose panels, a buzzing vent hose clamp, a dryer that is not level, or a stack of laundry products on top can all buzz at the right frequency. Check that the dryer is steady on all four feet and does not rock when you press a corner.

Installation notes

Stacked laundry and laundry-center arrangements carry sound between machines, so a noise that seems to come from the dryer may start in the washer below. Dryers in closets can amplify belt squeal because the louvered door acts like a speaker cone. And a dryer sitting on a springy wood floor in an older San Francisco flat often thumps harder than the same unit on concrete, because the floor flexes with every revolution.

Safe owner checks

  1. Turn the dryer off and take everything out of the drum. Feel along the drum lip and the gap behind it for coins and hard items.
  2. Turn the drum by hand with the dryer off or unplugged. Listen for scraping or catching, and note whether it turns freely.
  3. Check that all feet touch the floor and that the machine does not rock.
  4. Look at the vent hose for contact with the wall or the back panel.
  5. Run it empty for a short time and compare the sound with a loaded run.
  6. Write down the code on the display if one appears.

What not to do

Do not spray oil or lubricant into the drum area or on the belt. Oil on a dryer belt makes it slip, and oil near a heat source is a fire risk. Do not open the cabinet to adjust rollers, and do not keep running a dryer that is grinding loudly, since a failing bearing can score the drum and turn a small repair into a larger one.

When to book

Book when the noise comes back with an empty drum, when the drum does not turn freely by hand, when a squeal turns into a grind, or when you smell something hot. We find the source first, give you a written estimate, and repair nothing until you approve it. Describe the sound, when it happens and which model you have. The model label is usually inside the door frame. Our Frigidaire dryer repair service covers belts, rollers, motors and blowers, and the Frigidaire dryers guide shows the lineup we work on.

If the noise is paired with long drying times, read Frigidaire dryer takes two cycles to dry clothes. The Frigidaire FDGX21E4EW page is one example of the dryers we repair.
